A brief history of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome

Apart from its prime location, Santa Maria del Popolo is also important because it is the site of Emperor Nero’s death, having been built after the exorcism of demons believed to be residing in a walnut tree that grew by Nero's sepulchre. Pope Paschal II performed the exorcism after fasting for 3 days, praying and dreaming of the Virgin Mary and her instructions to free the city from the rampages of the demons.

The pope hit the tree at its root so that the spirits would depart, and he ordered Nero’s remains thrown into the Tiber. He then declared the site free to be devoted to Christian worship.
