The Masthugg Church was inaugurated in 1914 and is one of the most prominent sights in Gothenburg. The red church towers proudly above the city from atop a high hill and therefore makes an excellent destination to see some fantastic views over the city. Thanks to both its imposing location and its gorgeous architecture in a distinct style, this church has long since been recognised as an iconic landmark in Gothenburg and can be seen from far and wide. Following a competition between 4 architects, Sigfrid Ericson was tasked with designing the church in a National Romantic style. The church features a facade in red brick which is what gives the building its unique appearance and makes it easy to recognise all throughout the city.

What are the highlights of Masthugg Church?
The Masthugg Church boasts a 195-foot-tall church tower topped by a rooster which sits a whole 415 feet above sea level. Both of the clock towers were cast in the area at around the same time as the church was inaugurated. When visiting the church be sure to admire the altarpiece which was designed by Sigfrid Ericson together with the sculptor Ninnan Santesson and artist Engelbert Bertel-Nordström. It is comprised of a triptych depicting the ascension, Jesus praying in Gethsemane and the crucifixion. Also check out the font from 1991 which was designed by architect Arne Tollbom based on a sketch by Sigfrid Ericson. The church is open daily to anybody who wants to come inside and take a closer look at the architecture. The congregation also organises activities such as Saturday walks to other churches or events centred around different saints.
