The Myrtles Plantation is a bed and breakfast that offers a stay in a genuine arboretum plantation dating to 1796 and is designated one of the nation's most haunted homes. The home is an example of the classic Creole cottage architectural style with 22 rooms spread over two floors and decorated just as it was in the 18th century.

The surrounding grounds are centred around a large pond with a small island gazebo accessible by a bridge. Behind the house, the General's Store gift shop stands, and to the south, a restaurant building. You can easily spend days exploring the grounds and learning about its spooky history.

History of the Myrtles Plantation

The Myrtles Plantation was built in 1796 on 600 acres as the home of General David Bradford. It was originally named Laurel Grove, for a participant in the Whisky Rebellion, and renamed "The Myrtles" in the 1830s after the local flowers. The plantation survived the Civil War but was stripped by looters. It's gone through many hands since then.

The land was divided up in the early 20th century, and the legends surrounding it — specifically that it is haunted by ghosts of the Tunica Indians — gained it the reputation of The Most Haunted House in America. Today, the Myrtles Plantation is a bed and breakfast.

What to Know About the Myrtles Plantation

Though the Myrtles Plantation is a bed and breakfast, you don't have to be a guest to visit. You can just stop by, wander the grounds, or even take a tour. You can also visit the on-site restaurant and gift shop to find a souvenir and have a great meal.

Tours are held seven days a week and are offered day and night. You can book a guided, private, or self-guided tour. Because the plantation is authentic to its period, people with disabilities and especially people who use wheelchairs may be unable to navigate the stairs to the upper floors.
