Communication is key
I arrived a few minutes before 11pm to check in. I waited 10 minutes for an attendant to check me in, blocked by a locked door and an unanswered phone. I have learned via past experience with various Amarillo hotels that it isn't necessary to call ahead to notify of a late check in because most hotels are staffed 24/7. In this situation, one person had the responsibility of responding to guest requests and checking in arriving guests. That's fine, IF proper communication is established. I had no idea of knowing whether or not I would be able to check in to my room because I could not communicate with staff.
Also, breakfast had two options only: waffles or biscuits and gravy. No juice and no coffee due to malfunctioning machines.
