Historic hotel in Norway

Nice old hotel with ugly, well worn wing. No tea or coffee in the room. The buffet breakfast is ok but the smorgasbord dinner is excellent.

8/10 Very good

gorgeous fjordside setting

Definitely recommend -- but just don't forget your shampoo because besides a box of kleenex there are no little bottles, bars or showercap. Had to ask for another towel to use as a bathmat. Breakfast buffet which is included is wonderful, and the village of Balestrand idylic.

Amazing location

The hotel is in an amazing location. Magnificent views are seen from every location in the hotel, and there are many gorgeous places to sit outside as well. The art and antique furniture in the lobby areas is beautiful. It is a truly unique hotel that is able to match the magnificence of the fiords. The staff was incredibly helpful, polite, and friendly. We wouldn't hesitate returning if we were in Norway again.

Best Hotel in Balestrand

I did a lot of research before arriving at my decision to stay at the Kviknes. The rooms are slightly dated (quick tip: spend the extra cash for a room with a view) but the restaurant, cafe, and gift shop are the best!

location, location

The view of the hotel was fabulous as we arrived on the ferry. We loved sitting on the veranda at the front overlooking the fjord. We were supposed to be in the new wing, but they gave us 2 rooms that adjoined thru the bathroom in the old part. They were nicely decorated and had the best view. Only problem was no lift. Lots of stairs. Breakfast was delicious. The hotel has lots of history and has tons of antigue decoration.

Beautiful location

Great place to stay on a Norway in a Nutshell trip. They should somehow find a way to remove or refurbish the 1960's addition (which many hotels seem to have) that distracts from the original Victorian lodge.

10/10 Exceptional

Every were you point a camera is a perfect pic.

Highly recommend - Food, service views, town - one of the most peaceful places visited

Enjoy The Scenery

Spend your time outdoors enjoying the hotel's beautiful fjord surroundings. Limit your time indoors to minimize disappointment with less-than-luxury facility.

Nice hotel in a beautiful location

We stayed in the newer part of the hotel, which is an architectural eyesore in Balestrand but had spacious (for Europe) and comfortable rooms. The breakfast was amazingly varied and very tasty. We spent a couple of days in and near the town, walking and relaxing; we also took a loop trip to Forde over the high mountains -- marvelous views from the pass and great scenery on the tundra.

Historic Hotel with a special

Historic Hotel with a special location. Very good food.

Fantastic view

Hotel has a fantastic location -- right on the fjord. There is an historic building and a rather plain, ordinary building (where we stayed). The room was clean and spacious, but nothing special. However, the view was incredible. Lots of tour busses stop here so there was always a crowd at breakfast-

6/10 Good

Good but not to be enthusiastic

Very good location - The modern part of the hotel is shabby - It is not worth the rate paid (but perhaps this may be because Norway is expensive)

8/10 Very good

Fun Getaway in the Fjord

The hotel highlights were: (1) Sitting on the balcony and gazing out at the fjord. An amazing experience! (2) The buffet dinner. Very expensive but wonderfully grand. (3) Coffee after the buffet dinner in one of the lounges.

No disappointments. Super.

Unbelievable scenary

Traveling by car through the fjords of Norway to this wonderful hotel was terrific. The only negative was that the only diner option was a buffet. It was a very nice buffet but not our preference for dining.

Surprisingly delightful!

Owners were so nice. The hotel has been in the family for several generations. They gave us a book and explained the history behind the hotel. It is like stepping back in time. The palors are filled with antique furniture and priceless works of art. It was such a treat to stay there. The dinner buffet was first class. Gorgeous dining room overlooked the beautiful fjords. We had a room with a balcony on the seventh floor. We had the most wonderful view of the fjords and mountains with waterfalls streaming down. We would walk along the shoreline and watch the starfish among the seaweed. Unbelievable place to take photos. A Kodak moment everywhere you look! Colorful variety of flowers throughout the grounds. We realized after arriving we were already wishing we had a much longer stay!
