Took ages to check in as not enough staff. Staff were not very polite when I had an issue. When I finally got the manager the staff denied talking to me like that. They say wireless in every room with a fast connection. My connection was barely accessible and could not use the internet at all from room. I would not go there again. Everything from location hospitality was amazing. The only thing anyone needs to do is to book a smoking room, so you get a room with windows to have a view. Else, non smoking room durprisingly do not have windows. Enjoy!

I felt very uncomfortable in this hotel. Whilst waiting to check in I saw two seperate people book in for the hour, when I went to my room I saw several "ladies" roaming the hall. My room was tiny and in need of some serious decorating. I ended up not staying, as a single woman staying alone I did not feel safe.

This was the first time for me to live in a room where is no window. There was one small skylight but no windows at all. WLAN connection was quite poor.

Great location and value for money !

Beautiful 19th century building located right in the centre of the city - just where we needed. Only bad point was the noise of the extractor fans 'whirring' all night and turning them off didn't seem to do anything. Didn't affect sleep once we got over. Liked the 1100 check out also

A very traditional British style hotel. The room which I stayed is a single room. The windows are too small that you cannot even have a look at the outside.

The hotel is in a great location in central Manchester. Unfortunately it is tired, run-down, and has certainly seen better days. It also has a night club in the basement and the noise was appalling until 2ish in the morning.A cheap room cost could'nt make up for an unappealing hotel. Breakfast was extra and also poor.

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Britannia on Portland Street for 3 nights in January. We had a wonderful stay and could not of been happier with the location. The staff were friendly and the hotel was very clean. Very old fashioned television and not many channels, and the shower was never at a constant temperature were my only complaints. Overall the hotel was nice. However, I was put up on the top floor which was an "add" on. The walls were very thin and the furniture was very dated. The other rooms on the lower floors were much nicer. If I stayed again I would request not to be put up in the attic. The hotel was very convenently located.

Old-fashioned and updated. Magic main staircase, good room, quick service & banter in the bar. Great location, literally over the road to Chinatown & fabulous food. Car park right next door, discount on the fee from reception. To be recommended!

As usual the staff were lovely and I was treated as an honoured guest in spite of being able to afford a cheaper room. Very comfortable bed.

Despite all the poor reviews we booked the Britannia and it was brilliant ! The entrance porch is a war memorial and steeped in history well worth researching. The staff were very helpful and friendly the reception was first class and location unbeatable. we got this at a good rate and have no negative comments at all. We will return !

Stay there if you want a economical room. Good location.

i have stayed at this hotel twice and found it very reasonable in price very nice rooms location exellent my only fault really is the bar bit pricey and not much atmosphere but overall very good

Simply the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. I ended up getting the train home. I didnt even waste my time complaining as the queue was too big and it clearly wasn't just my room.

Good Hotel, City center, and a SMOOKING ROOM!!!!! YES!!!!

Nice big room and bed, clean bathroom. Quiet and very central. Bit scruffy in places but at this price you couldn't complain. Didn't try the breakfast but there's loads of places nearby doing full English for £3.99 upwards,

This was very central and good value for money. The staff were very friendly and helpful. It's a busy hotel so not the best choice if you want a quiet night or two but great spot for exploring the heart of the city of Manchester.

I stayed here for 2 nights and found the Hotel to be well situated for my needs , i found the hotel itself to be quite good value for what i did pay to stay , i did not do any dining at any of the places there as i liked to stroll around and find different types of food available.The bed while looking a little old was quite comfortable but was just […] about in need of changing as some people would maybe find it a little soft and uncomfortable,the bathroom was fine water was nice and hot shower worked great,the complimentary coffee and tea was a nice change as many hotels no longer give this service , lack of a fridge would be a drawback if staying long term other rooms may have these depending on the length of your stay so maybe a check with management is needed. If had to have one major and very very annoying feature that would possible turn me off staying here again it would be the floorboards creak and creak and creak to the point of insanity and as i am a light sleeper this was not a good thing for me. Other Guest also need to be told of the fact some people like to retire to their rooms to sleep before 10 pm and and maybe a notice in each room explaining this fact may help in some regards but probably not or the people would not be so inconsiderate in the first place, like the person in the adjoining room who's mobile phone was ringing from 3am on and all i could hear was this person talking quite loud for the rest of the early morning Oh did i mention the floorboard creak i do not know if this is in every room but i was on the 5th floor and it was like the people in the other rooms were actually walking in my room at all hours of the night i was finally glad to leave after the 2 days to get some sleep. But in saying all these things in the review i would possibly return to stay if needed as for the price it suited my needs but i will definitely be armed with some high quality earplugs on my return visit. The room had no windows? Nothing except a noisy air conditioner. Poor standards and although the hotel is most convenient, Id prefer to pay the extra for comfort.

I checked in at night.reception staff was not welcoming at all.I was charged for the room twice and he even did not bother to apologise .room was without any window at all and the heating was very noisy. I was really disappointed.

Booked a twin room arrived to find no twin rooms but two single rooms. Not happy with that and that little mistake really ruined my visit. Everything else was fine but I was really disappointed with being split up.

this hotel is in an excellent location. the only fault i could really say is that we had a room without windows and it felt a little claustrophobic. but great value all the same.

The hotel is located in City Centre. We visited it during Christmas 2011 . There is NO car park, and if you have a car stay away from this, as it will cost a fortune to have your car nearby.  If you’re not bothered housekeepers bang on your room door at 8am only (or another day 6pm), and if you’re not prepared to surrender room to them, you will […] lose the day of room cleaning, etc..  If you don’t care the hotel carpet be very old with too much wear & tear and dust;  If you’re not bothered if the wall paintings are full of scratch and dirt;  Or if you don’t care the a small very old TV on a very short stand near the room floor;  If you don’t need a table to put your cup of tea or basically anything else on it, as there’s none;  If you’re prepared to have an un-changed bed sheet from previous occupiers;  If it’s fine with you to have a bed with too much noise and un-even surface;  If it’s alright to have un working lifts (only one we could see and access to);  If you can park your car in another area miles away and grab a bus to come to hotel;  And finally if everything is totally worn off and you don’t need a real 3 STAR hotel; This will be a good chaoice!! The positives - fantastic location in the centre of Manchester. You walk out of the hotel and you are a couple of minutes walk from the shops and the train station. The hotel is impressive from the outside and the single room i stayed in was clean and comfortable - and of a reasonable size for a single room. The corridors and the decor in the room […] are a little tired and could definitely do with some renovating. However, what would put me off staying again was the quality of service at the hotel. Check-in took over 45 minutes, mainly due to the fact that there were only 2 staff on, one of whom was also dealing with left luggage at the same time. There were lots of staff wandering around (including the assistant manager) but no-one seemed overly concerned that the queue was snaking around the lobby. A third person was eventually put on.People don't expect to wait this long to check in. I stayed at another hotel in the centre of Manchester in mid December - check in took less than 5 minutes due to the efficiency of the check in staff. The hotel is fantastically located in the city centre and everything is very easily accessible. The room was clean, only downside is the walls were very thin on the 5th floor and at times the other guests could be very noisy so made it hard to sleep till late. Hotel clean, staff friendly & helpful. Stayed in a room on 5th floor - there was no window only a skylight - room did have TV, tea & coffee making facilities - beds comfy. Only stayed one night & served our purpose well for a works xmas night out. Location excellent for the centre of Manchester

The staff was very frendly, but there is a night club in the basement and I could hear the baseline up to the 5th floor. After I finally got to sleep around 1am, I got woken up by a drunk youth in his underpants at 6am, who thought he was staying in my room. This hotel is just okay. The staff is terrible, any question/inquiry was met with a blank stare and/or truly unpleasant demeanor. Every person I encountered was DREADFUL. The building is gorgeous but extremely run down. If they would invest in that hotel they could charge significantly higher for the rooms. Location is superb though. The hotel is very central located in Manchester, close walking distance to most things. Though the hotel is old and warn, so things look a dirty, even though they aren't. Nice and friendly hotel staff.

The hotel is in the city centre close to transport links. The breakfast is of good quality and is clean and tidy. The staff are courteous and helpful. I will stay here next time if I come alone. I don't know if it is suitable for children
