Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel - San Francisco

I arrived early, way before noon. Chris at reception was very accommodating and I was able to get in a room right away. That was great since I could then go about visiting a few sites in San Francisco sooner.

I am a meeting and event planner that used the Sir Francis Drake in the past for groups but had never been there myself. I decided to change that on a recent visit over Christmas. So I booked myself, my husband and my dad two historic queen rooms. Upon arrival, without even asking, the hotel upgraded both of our rooms to king beds. Very appreciated! Our […] room was right next to the elevators...didn't hear any noise from them at all. The room was beautiful. They maintained the lovely architecture and mouldings in the room while updating everything else. The rooms were a calm, subdued purple with white crown moulding. There was enough room for a chair, ottoman, desk and flatscreen tv - plus plenty of space for us to move around in. Bathroom was small but I do recognize that hotel-goers in the 1920's weren't expecting soaker tubs and small apartment-sized spaces. I had been concerned from reading other reviews, and even from the hotel's own description of their "historic rooms" that we were about to walk into a closet. Well that was not the case! My dad's room was equally great. As a great bonus, they even have a program where each day of your stay that you do not change your linens, you get a $10 voucher for the bar. So every night we had complimentary cocktails at the bar in the lobby before leaving for dinner. What's to say about the location...absolutely perfect for anyone wanting to experience the city. Convenient for tourists (the trolley stops right outside the door) - the location is so central that we were able to walk to every venue. We were completely sold on the Sir Francis Drake and will probably make it our go-to hotel every time we come to the city. And as a meeting planner, I can now send my groups there with confidence. For the naysayers, it is an old hotel with history and aged walls...but I thinks she looks great for being 84 years old! Devamı

Great view of Union Square and walking distance to everything we wanted to do. Nice size room and comfy bed but paper thin walls. My husband and I were away just to get some rest and had two small, crying children in the next room. With their bed right up against the wall to our bed, you could hear every whine and every unanswered solution the mom had […] to offer. Not the way I wanted to wake up especially at 7:00am on a getaway! We had told the front desk I was a very light sleeper and needed a quiet location so I was surprised they placed a family next to us. Beautiful hotel though with a GREAT location. Devamı

I would never recommend this hotel to anyone. There was no hot water to shower, there were tiny ants all around the sink in the bathroom, and the rooms are so tiny.

Very nice hotel right in the middle of the city. Historic location so rooms are small and the bed was a little hard for my taste but others may prefer that. Good amenities, helpful staff and great location.

The hotel has a great location. It also holds great charm. The rooms are a little small but fashionable updated. I would definitely stay again

I stayed during Xmas holidays and had a neighbor come home at about 130am and made noise until roughly 430am...walls paper thin and hotel security called. Drake comped night...that is only reason would not rebook in future...would ask for quietest room possible!

As part of our Christmas tradition we had taken our 8 and 6 year olds to see the Nutcracker, but thought it would be fun to spend the night in the city. The Sir Francis was a wonderful choice! It was close to all the shopping, great restuarants, and ice skating rink. We had a blast.

The hotel was great, nice design and seemed to pay a respectable homage to it's historical roots. Great location, delicious restaurant downstairs, my only complaint was the small room, but it didn't put a damper on our visit.

Desk clerk was an awesome help during our stay. It was my wife's birthday and we had planned on going to Harry Denton's for an evening of dining and dancing. Harry Denton's was booked for a christmas function and the restaurant next door was booked. He was able to get us into the restaurant and provide some complimentary certificate for the evening. […] So a potentially disasterous even became quite nice Devamı

Ok firstly let me premise this review with some words of wisdom, "you get what you pay for". This hotel looks really great from the outside, and has the feel of a 5 star hotel, BUT the experience I had was far from that, firstly the valet bill (which cannot be posted) cost 1/4 of what the room was. Ok it's the city so I guess we can expect that.... […] Next the front desk only had minimal staff, it took us a good 15/20 minutes before we could even check in. The front desk clerk tried to be friendly but we could sense that the stress of being the only one on the front desk was getting to her. Then we got to the room.... It reminded me of a dorm room I once stayed in, in New York City, I loved the renovations but the room I got through this hotels.com deal was, and I hate to say this (a hole in the wall). I expected a little more class from this caliber of hotel but the the best way to describe the deal is just "eh", for the amount we payed for the room, I would probably not recommend this hotel. Staff at the hotel were friendly and efficient. Our room was nice but small; not a big problem since there is so much to do in SF that you don't stay in it for long. We loved the convenience of walking to the major department stores and numerous restaurants.

It's a party hotel. Needs restoration and some stile to it. Noisy and tiny rooms for the queen bed. Not worth the money.

A great, fun hotel in the middle of Union Square in San Francisco. Definitely recommend it!

We checked in on Christmas night around 9:30pm. The first room we were given was very very tiny - the TV was on a side wall so you had to lie sideways on the bed to watch it - literally 2 feet between end of bed and the wall. Luckily for us, the heat wasn't working - we came back from dinner in Chinatown and the room was freezing cold so we requested […] a move. A few minutes passed and we were given a key to another room - we moved our bags down and, while the room was more spacious, there was an annoyingly loud exhaust fan noise coming from the bathroom which couldn't be turned off so we requested another move. Bellman appeared and moved us across the hall - lo an behold, the window in this room would not close! Finally, on our 4th try, we were given a room that was large, comfortable, and everything worked properly. The hotel also graciously granted us a generous room credit toward our stay which we were able to use in their restaurant, Scala's Bistro - which is pretty awesome. We love staying at the Sir Francis Drake and were happy the rest of our stay. Devamı

Great place in a superb location. Since parking and taxes for parking alone run $57 a night, it might be worth taking a cab if you will be there for a few nights.

Neat old hotel...across the street from Sears (great breakfast place)...close to major sightseeing, dining, and shopping...right by trolley stop...helpful staff.

Our stay was absolutely wonderful!!

Location is the best thing about this hotel. Also the soft and cozy bed linens. Didn't like that there was no in-room coffee. Bathroom rather cramped. But a nice, old hotel right in the midst of lovely Union Square area.

We spent 2 nights in San Francisco. The drake is in a great spot, right in the middle of he shopping district. The hotel is obviously quite old but very charming. Doorman wears the old beefeater costume. Room a bit small but very cozy. Staff all very helpful.

We checked in about 1PM, and were given drink coupons for the lobby bar! Wonderful. At 2:30, when we came back from lunch, the BAR WAS CLOSED....on Christmas Eve. Really? AND, it would not be opening again until the 26th. Really? We decided to go next door to Scala's (attached to the Hotel...also a Kimpton).....CLOSED on Christams Eve. Really? In […] the future, Hotels.com should post if the hotels Major Amenities will not be available to customers. Scala's was one of the reasons we chose the Drake....and not having an operating Bar in a hotel of this size and reputation....Not acceptable. Devamı

This hotel is very convenient to Union Square. The noise was the factor I rated this hotel a bit low. The street noise was very loud at night, but the noise from the maids outside my room at 7:30am was even worse. This hotel needs better soundproofing.

Service was outstanding and the room was comfortable. Would recommend this to anyone looking to blend old SF tradition with new SF style.

I was promised an adjoining room but did get one and when I asked about it, was told that they never promise that. We were assured our rooms would at least be next to each other and they were not. It took nearly 30 minutes to get my car from valet - which would have been ok except for the fact that I saw my car go by the corner a full 15 minutes beforehand […] (certainly someone took a detour). The window didn't open in one of our rooms - although it did in our other room. The ice machine on our floor didn't work. The restrooms downstairs were not clean. We had to grab our own taxi (not the doormans fault) but they needed tohave more people working as it was a busy weekend. I will not be back. Devamı

During a 6-night stay here, we were originally in a king room but it was extremely small.The closet was unusuable due to a large safe that made hanging anything longer than a shirt impossible. There was barely enough room to get around in the room and your knees hit the door while on the toilet. We upgraded to a deluxe king but this was a minimal improvement. […] The windows were filthy making any view not enjoyable. The bathroom window was stuffed with toilet paper due to the leaks. No coffee maker in the room; they did deliver one on request but the maids do not have coffee packets on their cart so it requires a daily call to the front desk. Twice we were unable to get anyone to answer the front desk phone. Once we did not get the wake-up call we requested. Overall, we will never stay here again BUT the location is awesome. A wonderful 24-hour 7-Eleven around the corner (west on Sutter) that always had fresh coffee, great salads and sandwiches and the most wonderful and helpful staff. Devamı

This hotel was very nice. The rooms are small. The bathrooms are even smaller. I loved the location. Don't know if I would stay there agin.

When selecting your room, don't think you're getting something special by upgrading from a Classic King to a Delux King. The room is tiny with a view of the exterior of another high rise. The hotel is beautiful, but when it comes to value, keep looking if that is important to you. People are nice and friendly.

Cleanliness and service were excellent. However, the size of the room and the amenities do not correspond to the price: there was no fridge/mini bar in the room; we could not borrow a wine bottle opener from the front desk; the room was so tiny that having the closet door open prevented one from walking to the other side of the room. Also the there […] were very few TV channels available and even those didn't work properly. There are other hotels in the Union Square area, including other Kimpton hotels, which seem to be a better deal. Devamı
