Sir Francis Drake, a Kimpton Hotel - San Francisco

Our stay was absolutely wonderful!!

Location is the best thing about this hotel. Also the soft and cozy bed linens. Didn't like that there was no in-room coffee. Bathroom rather cramped. But a nice, old hotel right in the midst of lovely Union Square area.

We spent 2 nights in San Francisco. The drake is in a great spot, right in the middle of he shopping district. The hotel is obviously quite old but very charming. Doorman wears the old beefeater costume. Room a bit small but very cozy. Staff all very helpful.

We checked in about 1PM, and were given drink coupons for the lobby bar! Wonderful. At 2:30, when we came back from lunch, the BAR WAS CLOSED....on Christmas Eve. Really? AND, it would not be opening again until the 26th. Really? We decided to go next door to Scala's (attached to the Hotel...also a Kimpton).....CLOSED on Christams Eve. Really? In […] the future, Hotels.com should post if the hotels Major Amenities will not be available to customers. Scala's was one of the reasons we chose the Drake....and not having an operating Bar in a hotel of this size and reputation....Not acceptable. Devamı

This hotel is very convenient to Union Square. The noise was the factor I rated this hotel a bit low. The street noise was very loud at night, but the noise from the maids outside my room at 7:30am was even worse. This hotel needs better soundproofing.

Service was outstanding and the room was comfortable. Would recommend this to anyone looking to blend old SF tradition with new SF style.

I was promised an adjoining room but did get one and when I asked about it, was told that they never promise that. We were assured our rooms would at least be next to each other and they were not. It took nearly 30 minutes to get my car from valet - which would have been ok except for the fact that I saw my car go by the corner a full 15 minutes beforehand […] (certainly someone took a detour). The window didn't open in one of our rooms - although it did in our other room. The ice machine on our floor didn't work. The restrooms downstairs were not clean. We had to grab our own taxi (not the doormans fault) but they needed tohave more people working as it was a busy weekend. I will not be back. Devamı

During a 6-night stay here, we were originally in a king room but it was extremely small.The closet was unusuable due to a large safe that made hanging anything longer than a shirt impossible. There was barely enough room to get around in the room and your knees hit the door while on the toilet. We upgraded to a deluxe king but this was a minimal improvement. […] The windows were filthy making any view not enjoyable. The bathroom window was stuffed with toilet paper due to the leaks. No coffee maker in the room; they did deliver one on request but the maids do not have coffee packets on their cart so it requires a daily call to the front desk. Twice we were unable to get anyone to answer the front desk phone. Once we did not get the wake-up call we requested. Overall, we will never stay here again BUT the location is awesome. A wonderful 24-hour 7-Eleven around the corner (west on Sutter) that always had fresh coffee, great salads and sandwiches and the most wonderful and helpful staff. Devamı

This hotel was very nice. The rooms are small. The bathrooms are even smaller. I loved the location. Don't know if I would stay there agin.

When selecting your room, don't think you're getting something special by upgrading from a Classic King to a Delux King. The room is tiny with a view of the exterior of another high rise. The hotel is beautiful, but when it comes to value, keep looking if that is important to you. People are nice and friendly.

Cleanliness and service were excellent. However, the size of the room and the amenities do not correspond to the price: there was no fridge/mini bar in the room; we could not borrow a wine bottle opener from the front desk; the room was so tiny that having the closet door open prevented one from walking to the other side of the room. Also the there […] were very few TV channels available and even those didn't work properly. There are other hotels in the Union Square area, including other Kimpton hotels, which seem to be a better deal. Devamı

The people were really nice and helpful, but the room was a little small and I had a dirty/stained towell in the bathroom. The shower was small and no light!! Once you pull the curtain it's dark...really weird. By comparison only - I would most likely stay in another hotel. I stay a lot in Union Square and have better rooms than this one...

Two of the four elevators were out of service causing us to wait almost 20 mins to get down stairs. Ended up dragging all our luggage down 12 flights of stairs cause it would have taken at least another 20 mins for the bellhop to come and do it cause he was waiting on the elevator as well. Rooms were clean but very small. Walls were thin allowing us […] to hear our neighbors tv and there conversations first thing in the morning. Location was great, close to everything we wanted to do by just walking there. Everything was overly expensive from the room to the valet which took another 20 mins. Were charged to enter the starlight lounge on the top floor even though we were guests there. Felt like that should have been complimentary based on how much the rooms are. I felt like we paid a lot of money to stand around and wait this weekend. Have stayed in nicer places for less money. I wouldn't have minded paying if the services and amenities were of caliber. Overall nice place but just overpriced for the quality and experience. Devamı

This hotel is an older hotel, but it is still well kept. We grew up in the Bay Area, so the age of the hotel is nostalgic; its a part of SF. Still, our room was nicely decorated and had a fresh updated look. The bathroom was very small and cramped. No counter space, not even a small ledge on the pedestal sink. A minor annoyance. It would be nice to […] be able to put your toothpaste or face wash on the sink counter at the same time. They could easily install a different pedestal sink to address this issue; maybe one with a built in towel holder, too. The only other disappointment was that the lounge was closed for renovation. That was part of the reason we stayed at the Drake. Just unfortunate timing and of course, they aren't going to advertise that when you book a room. We will probably opt for another hotel during our next stay. We would stay at the Drake again. But there wasn't anything about our stay that would make it our first choice. It was just okay. Devamı

The main reason we stayed at the Sir Francis Drake is the convenient location and it is a Kimpton Hotel that welcomes pet's i commend them for being so pet friendly we travel with two little dog's and at time's it is difficult to find a hotel in an urban area that is pet friendly from the very beginning the staff is very friendly hotel lobby is impeccable […] and service on par with the better hotels we book this was our first stay at the Sir Francis Drake we were a little surprised at the size of the room for the price compared to other hotels in the area the other concern was they advertise a pet welcome that includes a doggie bed and other items we did receive the bed's and bowls etc the beds seemed a little old and the bowl's were a cheap plastic for you dog lover's the accommodation's for the pet's are just as important over all the hotel was a good experience great location and we had a really good time the dog's loved the beautiful park 3 blocks away we loved all of the restaurants close by one other thing i really appreciate about the Sir Francis Drake is we wanted a late checkout so we could have breakfast at a nearby restaurant without hesitation the allowed us a 1pm checkout i would definitely recommend this hotel Devamı

We loved the location of our hotel but the rooms are very small. We would have loved a better view but over all it was nice.

We had such a wonderful stay at the Hotel which helped us layout each day activities and booking tickets. Friendly staff and the room and beds where very comfortable. We would classify it as a A+ stay and we felt very safe being afoot and using the Bart and Muni public transit from airport to Fisherman's Wharf.

Almost all aspects of our hotel stay were wonderful.. However, please not the following... The outside windows were absolutely FILTHY. We returned back to our room late on a Saturday night (2am) and found vomit in our corridor. (not the hotels fault). I called the front desk to inform them and when I got up for coffee at 7am, it still had been cleaned […] up. Was recommended by the front desk to go up to the bar on the top floor for the views. Went up on Friday night, paid $15 (no discount for hotel guests) only to find that the club was extremely warm, crowded and full of 21 year olds (I am a gay 48 year old) If thats your scene, great. checked into room 615 tired after two days of classes at dental convention. 10:30 pm i could hear the people next door talking-not loudly, through what must be thin walls, doors slamming, garbage trucks on the street.BAH! no shower cap, no lotion, nothing. next time will try Marriott across the street

The standard size queen room, while small, had been completely renovated and was very stylish. The bed, however, was incredibly uncomfortable and the two pillows they provided were hard. I had requested two more pillows and those were slightly better, but in the end I really didn't sleep well for the two nights I stayed there. I requested a coffee pot […] for the room upon arrival and the next day, after housekeeping had come by, they had left the dirty coffeepot and cups on the table, nor did they refresh the coffee, sugar, etc. Overall, the hotel is best for business travel or if you plan to be out of your room a lot, not necessarily a place where you should expect to get too comfortable. Amazing hotel with amazing service. Beautiful room. Great location. I only wish we could have stayed longer.

This hotel was wonderful inside, however, you can hear everything going on outside from the lower floors making it hard to get a good night sleep with all the horns and trash trucks in the middle of the night. All of the staff were exceptionally professional, and then you walk outside and there are homeless everywhere.

Kimpton hotels are always neat places, very stylish. I was essentially amazed at the decor of Francis Drake, very much a take off on 1930s, with wonderfully eclectic lamps, chairs, etc. Very small bathroom, but well done with effective use of white subway tile. Excellent service! Great help getting cabs. And the restaurant was superb, again, very well […] decorated. The only unfortunate aspect of our stay, which had absolutely nothing to do with the hotel, was a picket line in front of the Hyatt ,a block away. The singing of the picketers began at 7:00 and went on until dark, and from our room, we heard it all. But, overall, it added to the overall interest of the trip. Our short stay (2 nights) at the Sir Francis Drake was very pleasant. The hotel is well situated and it's a short walk to Union Square, shopping, the cable cars and many sights. The room decor is interesting, like the decorator couldn't decide on just one theme but the room was clean and comfortable. We did not have our dog on this trip but it's nice […] to know they are welcome at the Sir Francis Drake. The concierge was very helpful and we found we could purchase tickets to the Academy of Sciences right there at the hotel which was very convenient. Devamı

I think this is a good place for stuffy people who like to pretend they are rich. I didn't find it a particularly good value - you just don't get a lot for your money, but it looks nice.

Overall this hotel is great! The bed was very comfortable, the furniture was posh and well kept (and modern). My only complaint is that the bathrooms are extremely small. If you are a big person (I'm 6'5" 290) you will find yourself going to the lobby for certain restroom needs. They could fix this by changing out the extremely bulky pedestal sinks. […] Hotel bar is very nice, bartenders were great and nice to look at! Devamı

Great location but I don't think the walls have any insulation. It sounded like my neighbor was in my room. I could also hear the street traffic like it was just a few feet away from my window. I was on the 5th floor so maybe it's quieter higher up. But the biggest disappointment was the fact that the Starlight bar on the 21st floor was closed the entire […] time we were there! No signs or explanation. We were told it would open in a few days but that was no help to us. This was the entire reason why we booked this hotel. And we weren't the only people upset about this. I can't even count how many people walked into the elevator, selected the 21st floor, only to be told by others in the elevator it's closed. Devamı

My husband and I had a one night stay here that was booked last minute. We had lunch and breakfast at the lovely hotel restaurant and both meals were great and did not disappoint. The room was clean and nicely put together but the bathroom was a little on the small size. Overall our stay was very comfortable but I feel like the hotel cheaped out on […] cable tv options. At the end of a long day of sight-seeing I wanted to chill out and watch a little tv and the choices were dismal for the price the hotel charges for a room. On the hotel website there was a 25% off parking a hybrid car offer. When checking out we were told it was no longer valid. Devamı

What a great hotel !! Older VERY classy with all kinds of modern touches, from iphone/ipad docking stations to upgraded bathrooms. what a great hotel from the price and location. Totally worth the price !! Staff is great as well !!!

This hotel is one of the better ones in the Union Square area. Great staff but the Queen rooms are a little small so if looking to stay pay the extra for the larger room.

I came to SF to see the City. Who would not want a view from the hotel. Opened the binds and found a window so dirty that I could hardly see out. Disappointed that it was so dirty. Room and hotel was clean everywhere else.

The windows had not been washed in some time, so any view was blurred by grime. Also, they were single panes of glass only, meaning the noise from what sounded like garbage collection around 11PM and road construction started up at 6AM came in like the windows were wide open. The desk clerk at check in advised the room might not be the quietest, but […] that none others were available. I said "fine, so long as 'a little noisy' is not 'loud'". Until after 11PM and then from 6AM it was loud. The hotel is done up in a glamorous manner and the rooms are both clean and comfortable. The concierge offered good restaurant suggestions and the front desk printed the boarding passes for our flights in the morning. Good service. Devamı

Seriously every aspect of this place was AWESOME, location, service, opulence. Honestly would have been 100% if it hadn't been for the very rude behavior of a curly haired bartender.

When I got to the hotel around 5 PM, and then checked in (the check in time is 3PM), walked to my room, the cleaning service was still inside, and asked me to wait outside while she added the finishing touches. The toilet did not stop running once it was flushed, which was annoying. I had paid for a city view and supposedly deluxe room, the "city view" […] faced another cement building and the deluxe room was nothing special. Also, I chose to stay at this hotel because I loved it before, and planned on going up to the Starlight Room, which didn't even seem to be open during my stay... I don't plan on staying here again.
